As a business or sales department grows it can sometimes lead to an awkward spot.  You find yourself with a small sales staff but limited resources to manage them day to day and to provide the leadership and development they need.  Large companies quickly provide these resources as their cost model with a large team easily justifies a well paid, well trained, experienced Sales Manager.  It is tougher to justify that for a small team. However, at the same time the team and business need the skill same skill set in their Sales Manager.  Hiring a cheap Sales Manager is not really an option.  Often the team then is left to report to the owner or to no one at all.  This is not ideal either.  The owner has enough on their plate and may not have experience to lead sales.  Having no sales manager just leaves the team at risk and engagement low.  So, how do you provide top level management at a lower cost?
